A call from Dr Dawit Wondimagegn “to strike for a health professional is to aim.. to shoot, And kill.”

Medicine, my profession, where my loyalty lies and am sure yours too! Those who believe this should break their silence and speak out against any threat of a strike. To strike for a health professional is to aim.. to shoot. And kill. We cannot stand by and watch when some amongst us are aiming to shoot.

Dear colleagues

I am writing this to you as your fellow professional because it is time for loyalty for our profession should prevail over anything else.

As you all have followed current developments in our sphere, there is increasing threat to strike, I have no intention of minimizing the grievances we all have, however we also have to stand by our duty which is to serve and protect the poor. We cannot stand by and watch for anyone to use ‘the poor’ as a bargaining chip.

There may be arguments and counter arguments, some would say ‘we are struggling for the betterment of the system’ which may be true but still fall short of justifying the ‘potential death’ of one individual because, as we all know, that single person who will die will not be one of us.

That single person who will die will be ‘ the mother…emaye’ who brought us here, who suffered through endless poverty so that we could eat when we came from school…..and fed us “hope”…

That single person who will die will be ‘ the father…abaye’ who tirelessly tried to make ends meet…the guard at our hospital who was worrying how he will send 150 birr to his son, in medical school somewhere, every month for his pocket money….

That single person who will die will be ‘ the daily laborer….the janitor. The house maid…the clerk…’ who saved 10, 20 birr to give their brothers and sisters at medical schools so that they can share tea with those who have…..

That single person who will die will be ‘ that mamush and that mimi….’ with a loving mother who hopes one day Mimi/Mamush will grow and change her life, once the doctor cured her/him of her illness …

Dear all

I am appealing to you to be ready to do the right thing. We, as health professionals, have the sanctity of life in our hands to serve and protect at any cost. We have been doing that for most of our lives under difficult circumstances. We have touched the lives of many with our healing hands and many have been healed.

We gave ourselves to a profession by choice to give hope to those who gave it to us when we had nothing! Now is not the time to abandon those who gave us the most that can be given for something we will get anyways.

Medicine, my profession, where my loyalty lies and am sure yours too! Those who believe this should break their silence and speak out against any threat of a strike.

To strike for a health professional is to aim.. to shoot. And kill. We cannot stand by and watch when some amongst us are aiming to shoot.
